The New York Yankees avoided another injury scare in the departments of DJ LeMahieu and Miguel Andujar.
New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu is day-to-day with knee inflammation while slugging third baseman Miguel Andujar is inching closer to a return. Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com provided the update.
Per Caldera, DJ LeMahieu had an MRI on his knee Monday, which revealed the inflammation. The slick-hitting second baseman fouled a ball off his knee in Friday’s win over the San Francisco Giants but remained in the game. LeMahieu also played Saturday and Sunday but left the latter game with pain in the knee.
When asked if he would play in the two-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which starts tonight LeMahieu simply said, “I think I’ll be good.”
The injury-depleted Yankees received more good news on third baseman Miguel Andujar. He suffered a small labrum tear in his right shoulder early in the season, but his rehab from it says otherwise.
Andujar went 3-for-5 in extended spring training on Monday and also held his own at third, making two throws across the diamond. He is expected to join the Class-A Tampa Tarpons today. If all goes well, he could be activated as soon as this weekend.
It may seem small, but this is some of the best news the Yankees could have received. The team has 13 players on the injured list, including heavy hitters Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. LeMahieu has been a godsend, hitting .310 while the power bats heal.
That means getting back Andujar, who slugged 27 home runs last year, will provide some much-needed power in the lineup. New York has gone 9-1 in its last ten games, but Andujar is still a key player.
If he’s back and fully healthy, there’s one thing left to say. Look out, baseball, here come the Yankees!
