Pete Alonso is showing no signs of slowing down. After going 0-for-4 in the first leg of the New York Mets‘ doubleheader with the Yankees, the rookie wasted no time in the nightcap. He launched a home run off of James Paxton in the first inning after fighting off multiple breaking balls from the tough lefty.

The home run was exactly what the doctor ordered after the Mets were on the wrong end of a 12-5 thrashing in the afternoon matinee. The Yankees used the long ball to make Zack Wheeler‘s day miserable. Alonso and company are trying to switch things up in the second and final game of this short series.

However, the Mets shouldn’t feel too comfortable with that three-run lead this early. The Yankees were down 4-1 earlier on Tuesday before scoring 11 of the final 12 runs in the game.

The Bronx Bombers have made a habit of staging improbable comebacks and the Mets have had more than a few struggles with their bullpen. Luckily for manager Mickey Callaway, his best relievers are well rested.

With the exception of the Yankees using Tommy Kahnle for one batter, neither team needed to use their high-leverage relievers in the first game of the doubleheader. Furthermore, both teams have off on Wednesday so there’s no reason for either team to hold back the likes of Edwin Diaz, Aroldis Chapman, Seth Lugo, or Adam Ottavino.
