The New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Maccagnan. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News first reported the sudden news and the organization has since made it official.

“This morning, I informed Mike that he was being relieved of his duties as General Manager of the team, effective immediately,” Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement.

The New York Jets tweeted the entire statement moments later.

Maccagnan was hired as general manager in June 2015, replacing John Idzik, who was fired after only two seasons. Maccagnan had two years left on his contract. His top accolade is drafting the Jets franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold a year ago.

The had been some talk of a rift between the Mccagnan and new head coach Adam Gase. Its been reported by the New York Post sports desk that Gase will serve as the interim general manager until a new one is selected.

Gase was hired by the Jets in January after he was fired by the rival Miami Dolphins on Dec 31. His regular season record as coach of the Dolphins was 23-25.

The constant disruptions within the Jets organization continue to surprise the NFL world and its fans.

How can an organization allow a GM to hire the teams, new head coach, organize this year’s draft and then fire him before the season begins? This is the question Jets fandom is currently struggling through.
