Despite early speculation that the Grizzlies were locked in on Ja Morant, the point guard could still fall to the New York Knicks at No. 3.
The 2019 NBA Draft is fewer than three weeks away, but so much can change between now and June 20. Early on, Ja Morant to the Memphis Grizzlies seemed like a complete lock. However, the New York Knicks may find themselves in the running to land Morant.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Morant is undergoing a minor procedure on his knee and his recovery should take between three and four weeks. Furthermore, Marc Berman of the New York Post reports that the Knicks still feel like the Grizzlies are not locked in on Morant.
“The Post reported Memphis was leaning toward the Murray State point guard after the lottery reveal with the No. 2 pick, with Duke swingman RJ Barrett falling to 3,” Berman wrote. “According to a source at the combine, however, the Knicks never thought Morant was a shoo-in for Memphis.”
Prior to this news, Knicks fans were already gearing up for the possibility of drafting RJ Barrett. Moreover, the Knicks are involved in several rumors concerning a possible trade. The Knicks had some contact with the Atlanta Hawks recently and the Cleveland Cavaliers appear to have “supreme interest” in Barrett. Of course, a trade for Anthony Davis would include the No. 3 pick.
Simply put, there are a number of possibilities for the Knicks with the third overall pick. The narrative will change a few more times before the draft is here.
