Pete Alonso is on track to be the National League Rookie of the Year if he can stay healthy. The rookie first baseman is a sensation for the New York Mets and is quickly becoming one of the biggest athletes in New York.

On Friday, Alonso made one lucky fan’s dreams come true by inviting him on the field to have a catch.

It is easy to root for Alonso. Throughout this rollercoaster ride of a season, the 24-year-old has handled himself with the utmost professionalism and he always seems to say and do the right thing. That’s more than we can say for some of his veteran teammates.

Alonso is heading to the All-Star Game in Cleveland and he’s going to represent the Mets in the Home Run Derby as well. The rookie is already at 29 home runs on the season. That’s good for third in baseball and he’s on the heels of two MVP candidates, Cody Bellinger (30) and Christian Yelich (31).

He was at it again on Friday night, smashing a towering home run off of Vince Velasquez at Citi Field. Despite Alonso’s remarkable first half, the Mets haven’t been able to stay afloat in the division. The Mets trail the first-place Atlanta Braves by 13.5 games.

The bullpen faltered again on Friday and let another excellent start. Once again, Edwin Diaz was the culprit, allowing four runs in the ninth inning while only recording one out. The closer now has an ERA of 5.67. Yikes.

Alonso and the Mets will look to get back on track on Saturday night when Noah Syndergaard (5-4, 4.56 ERA) faces off against Jake Arrieta (8-6, 4.43 ERA).
