If the New York Yankees are in the market for starting pitching help, they might target Mets starters Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler.
The New York Yankees are thriving despite the litany of injuries that have befallen them. Their starters have the fifth based ERA in the MLB, but that unit is always a concern for general manager Brian Cashman.
While it’s still too early to expect any imminent trades, the Yankees are sure to be buyers when the trade deadline approaches. In fact, SNY’s Andy Martino believes the Yankees could pursue two New York Mets starters—Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler.
Martino discusses the various possibilities for Cashman, including Dallas Keuchel, Madison Bumgarner, Mike Minor, and Marcus Stroman. However, a potential trade between the crosstown rivals is always intriguing.
“And here’s a wild card option: If the struggling Mets find themselves out of contention by summer, expect the Yankees to inquire again on Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler,” writes Martino.
“Remember, the Yanks were pushing to trade for Mets starting pitching at the winter meetings in December, when the solid relationship between new GM Brodie Van Wagenen and Brian Cashman improved the dynamic between the clubs. The Yankees made a run at Syndergaard then, and haven’t forgotten about him or Wheeler.”
The plot thickens. Last season, the buzz in New York was all about the Bronx Bombers making a run at Jacob deGrom. Following deGrom’s contract extension, the Yankees will have to set their sights on a different Mets hurler.
Syndergaard and Wheeler could make sense for either team. Should the Mets continue to slide out of the playoff picture, they could look to revamp a depleted farm system.
Syndergaard is the better pitcher and under control through 2021. Clearly, he would fetch more value than Wheeler, who will become a free agent after the 2019 season.
Either way, this is an interesting subplot to the 2019 baseball season in New York. In the past, a trade between the Mets and Yankees was unthinkable.
However, Van Wagenen and Cashman might be bold enough to pull off a deal.
