New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway is remarkably optimistic concerning forgotten All-Star outfielder, Yoenis Cespedes.

The New York Mets would love to have Yoenis Cespedes back in the lineup, and manager Mickey Callaway thinks it will happen this year.

Appearing on “Mike’s On” on WFAN, Callaway further elaborated:

“My gut tells me we will, and that’s what I hope for,” the manager said on whether or not we will see Cespedes on the field this season. “What happens, I can’t speculate on that. … Knowing this guy and how bad he wants to come out here and contribute, especially with this team, my bet would be on him.”

Cespedes hasn’t played since July 20 of last year and is currently recovering from double heel surgery. He was limited to 38 games last year and hit .262 with nine home runs and 29 RBI. He was initially acquired from the Detroit Tigers in July 2015 and is currently in the third year of a four-year, $110 million deal. Cespedes has played in only 119 games over the life of the contract.

And yet, Callaway believes the 33-year-old will return at some point this season. Cespedes has since resumed hitting in the batting cage but is still unable to run. Despite that, Callaway insisted Cespedes “feels great every day” and “his heels feel so much better.”

Hopefully, for the Mets’ sake, Cespedes returns soon. New York is 15-15 and second in the NL East, two games back from the Washington Nationals. However, the team’s run differential is -20 and the Mets rank 24th in team home runs.

Here’s hoping Callaway’s gut feeling is right, because the Mets could really use Cespedes’ bat soon.
