Add another “first” for the young career of Pete Alonso.

With two on and nobody out in the bottom of the 10th-inning on Tuesday night, the New York Mets young slugger picked up his first-career RBI walk-off, cementing a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The key to the inning was Jeff McNeil‘s cool, calm demeanor. After getting absolutely fooled on a first-pitch changeup, he took a ball and evened up the count only to serve a low one into right field with J.D. Davis, who led off with a double, on second.

Too many big leaguers can’t deliver in that pesky man-on-second, no-out situation yet the Mets purest hitter did it with ease. McNeil finished 4-for-5 with a run and a fantastic bunt hit on the night.

New York took a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Todd Frazier smacked his second moonshot of the season.

A 3-1 9th-inning lead looked all-but-secure until Jeurys Familia, who had cruised through his first five outs, suddenly broke down with Cincinnati down to its last out.

After relenting two runs, young Drew Gagnon came on in relief to send the game to extras. Familia finished with two earned on four hits and a walk in 2.1 pitched. Gagnon pitched a perfect top of the 10th to earn his first victory of the campaign.

Elsewhere, shortstop Amed Rosario finished with two hits while walking once. Starter Jason Vargas finally turned in a solid outing, finishing with one earned on three hits and three walks in 5.1 innings pitched.

The 15-14 New York Mets will look to take Game 3 on Wednesday night before wrapping up the four-game slate on Thursday.
