It turns out some villains are brave.

On Wednesday, entry No. 6 on ESNY’s most notorious New York sports all-time villain list, Chase Utley, entered the lion’s den. Joining WFAN’s “Boomer & Gio” to promote his recent charitable work, Utley fielded calls from disgruntled New York Mets fans.

The results were genuinely hilarious (video above).

“No, that’s why I appealed it,” Utley said in response to the first caller who got all over him about the infamous Ruben Tejada incident. “If his leg didn’t break, we’re not having this conversation. It’s obviously unfortunate.” Utley added that he tried to reach out to Tejada after the incident through David Wright, but that Tejada didn’t want to talk to him. “I sent him a very nice bottle of tequila to say sorry.”

Of course, Utley cemented himself in New York sports villain lore in October 2015. Sliding hard into second, he essentially ruined Tejada’s career during the NLDS.

Mets fans have not forgotten, as evidenced by the callers.

Utley, 40, played 16 big-league years, torturing the Mets every step of the way. In 194 career games against the Mets, Utley hit .281 while clubbing 39 homers and producing 116 runs batted in, essentially an entire season worth of star statistics.

Chase Utley will go down in history as one of the more infamous Met killers of all-time, firmly earning his place as an all-time New York sports villain and evidenced by Wednesday morning’s proceedings, fans will not soon forget.
