New York Mets outfielder Rajai Davis had a crazy day that started with an Uber ride and ended with a home run.
Late call-ups can lead to some crazy situations when players try to get to their games. The New York Mets made the decision late on Wednesday to place Brandon Nimmo on the injured list and call up Rajai Davis.
Davis found out he was getting the call at 5 p.m. ET. At the time, he was in Allentown, PA, taking batting practice with the Syracuse Mets, while the big club’s game started at 7.
So he did what people often do when they need rides today; he hailed an Uber for the two-hour ride. He told SNY about the ride and how he bonded with his driver, whose name was Jason.

He joked that he didn’t know how much it cost but that he wasn’t “footing that bill” (MLB teams cover travel expenses for players being moved between levels). He arrived at the game during the third inning and joined the team in the dugout.
Davis proceeded to launch a pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning to seal a 6-1 victory in a game when Jacob deGrom threw a gem. The team picked up their third straight win amidst rumors of manager Mickey Callaway being on the hot seat.
The use of an Uber from ballpark to ballpark means that Davis didn’t have a chance to gather his belongings from Syracuse. But the veteran is probably fine with that if it means he has a chance to play in the major leagues again.
