Former New York Rangers bad boy Sean Avery in trouble again

Sean Avery, the former New York Rangers agitator, was in court Monday for allegedly hitting a car with his scooter.

Sean Avery has found himself in the public eye recently. Last week, the former New York Rangers agitator was announcing trades between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets, which turned out only as rumors.

On Monday, Avery was in court for allegedly bashing a car that was parked in a bike lane in Greenwich Village, NY.

Instead of swinging a familiar hockey stick, as he did when he was a player in the NHL, Avery’s choice of weapon was an unusual one: the scooter he was riding. Avery was arraigned on a desk appearance ticket on one count of criminal mischief for allegedly hitting the driver’s side door with his scooter, Feb. 23 at East Eighth Street and Broadway.

“If I need to be the poster boy for defending the bike lanes, I will absolutely do that,” the notorious scrapper told Rebecca Rosenberg and Khristina Narizhnaya of the New York Post. “We need to be able to just bike in freedom.”

Avery has become an advocate of protecting bike lanes for some time now. He has had several altercations with people who have blocked the bike lanes and has posted the alterations on his Instagram account.

Avery arrived at court without any legal representation and was assigned a free public defender.

This was not the first time he has had legal trouble; he was arrested for throwing rocks at cars in 2015 prior to his wedding to model Hilary Rhoda.

Avery is due back in court on July 5 and if convicted, could face up to one year in jail.
